Roger retired from his position as Regional Consultant with the Higher Education Council for England (HEFCE) in 2009. From June 2010 until December 2013 he was Chief Executive Officer for Yorkshire Universities (YU), before retiring for the second time. He continues to work for YU in the capacity of Associate, responsible for projects including student engagement and the civic, place building role of universities.
After graduating from Cambridge Roger entered teaching, becoming particularly interested in “distance education”. He worked for The Open University from its inception and remains very interested in open learning. He achieved several of his own qualifications by this route including BA and BPhil from The Open University, PG Certificate of Education from the University of London and several business credits via the Open College.
He has written many books and learning resources for students, lecturers and those responsible for setting up new educational systems. Titles include “How to write essays”, “How to write flexible learning materials” and “How to plan and manage an E-learning programme”.
In 1992 Roger was appointed BP Professor of Learning Development at the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside, working on the development of a “new learning environment” and the first employment-based skills course in the country.
Roger was appointed as Regional Consultant for HEFCE in 1998 where he had national responsibilities, as well as covering the northern regions.
Roger is also active in a voluntary capacity with a number of organisations, as Chair of both the Friends of Beverley Minster and the Georgian Society for East Yorkshire.
